Act 48

Pennsylvania's professional development law, known as Act 48 of 1999, sets forth requirements regarding continuing education for all certified educational professionals.

Every five years, all certified educators must complete 180 hours of professional development. This work must be directly related to an area of the professional educator's assignment and certification.

The 180-hour requirement can be met with 180 hours of continuing professional education, six college credits (one credit of collegiate study is equivalent to 30 hours of continuing professional education), or any combination of these or other programs, activities, or learning experiences equivalent to 180 hours.

Educators can find more information about their five-year window and accumulated Act 48 hours by visiting the Act 48 Professional Education Record Management System (PERMS).

Information is linked directly to an educator's Professional Personal ID (PPID). Educators can retrieve their PPID here.
