The Quakertown Community School District today received a check for $19,083.56 from The GIANT Company as part of its Feeding School Kids initiative.

The money was raised by customers at the two Quakertown area GIANT supermarkets along Route 309 who rounded up their bill to the nearest dollar or donated by converting points earned with their purchases earlier this year. GIANT then matched that number.

“The Quakertown Community School District is grateful for this support,” Superintendent Dr. Bill Harner said. “These stores play a valuable role in our community. They are a major destination for our community when it comes to grocery shopping. And they’re a major employer for our students, where they often receive their first paycheck and develop a professional work ethic.”

He said the money would be used for the district's summer meals program.

Dr. Harner, along with Peter Kelley, Director of Dining Services in QCSD for Chartwells Food Services, chatted with GIANT store managers Tom Wasko and Andy Edwards during a check presentation.

“We very much value our customers, and are pleased to be able to give back to the school district,” Mr. Wasko said.

GIANT raised more than $3.3 million to address the issue of childhood hunger throughout local public school districts in the communities it serves. It matched the first $1.5 million donated by customers.

Jessica Groves, GIANT’s manager of social impact, said “Research consistently shows the connection between good nutrition and the ability to learn and school food programs are critical to ensuring that many children receive regular meals. Thanks to the generosity of our customers, our Feeding School Kids initiative will directly impact our local school food programs, helping to build strong, healthy students, in turn strengthening their families and communities.”
