Child makes a huge bubble at the bubble station

On the evening of Tuesday, May 12th, students of QCHS’s Science National Honor Society hosted a STEM Night for our QCSD elementary students at Quakertown Elementary. The gymnasium of QE showcased 12 STEM stations, inviting students to explore various engaging hands-on science activities, including:

Binary code alphabet bracelet table: students were encouraged to create a bracelet representing their name

Number Dash table: students used dice and addition to move through the Number Dash activity

Students line up at the number dash station to play the game.

Oobleck table: students made the slime-like substance with cornstarch, water and food coloring. It had the appearance of being liquid like, but in actuality it was solid

Popsicle stick catapults: students created catapults with popsicle sticks, spoons and puffy balls

Paper airplane station: with help, students folded and made the perfect paper airplane, and tested each design’s distance to see which model flew the furthest

Make-your-own solar system activity: students were provided paper cutouts of all the planets in our solar system to create a paper model

Milk fireworks experiment: students poured milk into a small petri dish and added drops of food coloring to the center. Then they dipped a Q-tip into dish soap and touched the center of the colors. The soap broke down the surface, creating rapid swirling colors

Coke and Mentos explosions: students dropped Mentos mints into the soda bottle, triggering a rapid, geyser-like eruption

Marshmallow tower challenge: students were tasked with building the tallest possible freestanding structure using toothpicks and mini marshmallows

Microscope station: students had the chance to examine materials under a microscope, including bugs and snake skins

Chromatography activity: Students learned that since different color pigments have different weights, they are carried at different speeds and end in different places.
