Health and Physical Education

Department Overview

Health and Physical Education (PE) are integral components of the total educational program. Students receive health and PE at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. The primary goal of the program is to teach students the essential concepts and skills to pursue lifelong fitness and good health. Healthy young people will lead healthier, more productive lives. We offer students many learning experiences to develop their bodies and minds for success in all aspects of academics. Through health and PE classes, students learn how to set goals, make informed decisions, self-monitor, use motivation, and persevere through challenges - all of which are considered key learning skills needed for college and career readiness.

The health and PE curriculums, instruction, and assessments are aligned with the PA Academic Standards for Health, Safety, and Physical Education. According to PA regulations, health and PE includes the instruction of the following content:

  • Concepts and skills that affect personal, family, and community health and safety
  • Nutrition
  • Prevention of alcohol, chemical, and tobacco abuse
  • Physical fitness
  • Movement concepts
  • Motor skill development
  • Safety in physical activity settings

At the elementary level, HPE is offered as a part of the six-day "specials" rotation.

Adapted Physical Education

The Adapted Physical Education (APE) program helps to better serve the needs of our students and meet the PA State and Federal regulations. APE is modifying an activity or skill so it becomes appropriate for students with disabilities as it is for students without disabilities. At the elementary level, APE is offered to students in addition to the regularly scheduled physical education class. APE is a direct service provider, and students with disabilities receive APE as part of their special education services.
